I sometimes want to dig a hole to bury myself

Published by suzette at 2:13 pm under All,Ian

I realized that I have a new repetitive action, whenever I am in Ian’s music class. I tend to bury my head/face deep into my palms, or rub my face, or wince, every time I feel so embarrassed…

Well, okay, I admit I am proud of Ian in many ways. He is smart and quick, I think he is the ‘leader’ of the class. He is a fast learner, and also a self learner. He watched the DVD a couple of times, and he can remember or conceptualize what those musical notes mean. In many way, I am proud of him. But, but, but… his behavior in class, often makes me… err… panic sometimes.

Here are a few that I could remember, just to share with you…
———–
He really cannot sing. He shouts, instead of sings. He either keeps quiet, or he would suddenly shout out those notes. Teacher commented on him many times, “Please don’t be so fierce”, or “Can you please sing nicely?” etc.

Here is an example (I recorded to let DH know). It is when the teacher trains them to sing the notes, notice the near ending part:

————-
At the same time when teacher was training them to sing the notes, at one point when they were singing “Do-Re-Mi, Mi-Re-Do”… This mischievous boy accompanied the song with KUNGFU. He was doing his kick-boxing, rhymed with the “Do-Re-Mi, Mi-Re-Do”.

————-
After singing the notes, the teacher played her usual tune for the kids to sit down on the floor, “Everybody sit-down, sit-down…” it goes this way. The moment the teacher plays, all the kids were still staring at the teacher didn’t know what to do. My boy immediately sang the song loudly, and happily ushering everyone to sit down.

And the best part is, he would still be standing or running around, singing that song loudly, asking others to sit!

————–
So, after everyone sits down already, the teacher took out a marker pen, drew a sign on the board. Before the question came out, Ian shouted, “I know, this one is G-Clef!!”

The teacher then nodded and said, “Yes, this one is called a G-Clef”

My cheerful boy… did not just stop there, he said, “You see! I told you I know it is G-Clef, I am so clever, right?”

Then, the teacher said, “This G-Clef also has another name…”

Ian finished her sentence, “Yes, I know also, it is Treble Clef”

The teacher was silent for a moment, then said, “Yes, it is also called Treble Clef”.

This fella, he was so excited that he got it right, he shouted, “Wah, you see, I so ‘geng’ hor? I know all these already hor!”

The teacher’s expression was so mixed. She finally laughed and said, “Yeah, you know everything already, so maybe you don’t have to come to my class already.”

(ya, I know, she was a bit too sarcastic, maybe she doesn’t like Ian… I’m glad Ian didn’t notice that.)

You see, in all these circumstance, I feel like I wanted to bury myself somewhere. LOL!

Ya, funny too, coz I was laughing (nervously) too.

At some point, I had to interfere in the class, coz Ian tend to get over excited and couldn’t control himself. I needed to remind him.

But I also don’t want to kill his innocent natural enthusiastism. Right now, he is still happily raising hand, answering teachers’ questions, etc. Last week, at one point when I scolded him in the class (quietly between the 2 of us), he was sad and quiet for a while. That moment, teacher asked a question, no one answered, and the teacher turned and called his name, he refused to answer too (I think he knows the answer). I think I should let him enjoy himself… ERRGGHH!!! Struggle, need to draw a balance!!!

Oh, well, there is one thing that troubles him although he thinks he is good in everything else. His motor skill is rather weak. He is good in theory not in practical. So, when they are all asked to play on the electone, he had difficulties playing even “Do-Re-Mi”.

He asked me in puzzled tone, “Mama, why I cannot play this one well?”

I have to explain to him that he is still small, he needs some time to practice and improve it. I hope he overcomes this quickly.
