Our First Music Class
2 weeks ago, we stumbled upon a new Yamaha school nearby. I took its brochure and was interested in their junior classes. One type is for 3.5 years old, that is Isabel’s age, which is designed for 6 months. Another one is for 4-5 years old, Ian’s age, for 2 years.
I was very temped to let my children join, because I know Yamaha’s schedule is very interesting.
I myself have G8 piano qualification, but it was from the ABRSM system. A very classical, but boring system. I never enjoyed playing piano, honestly, although I finished all the 8 grades. So, I would really like my kids to be exposed to something that is fun.
But…. I haven’t got a job. How can I spend that kind of money. Not cheap… So, I scraped the idea.
Few days later, DH told me to enroll them. He said something like – Life will be richer and fuller with music. And he doesn’t know music, so he thought of exposing our kids.
So, our last Saturday was at the Yamaha school. I then found out that I have to be with my kids, in the entire class! It is not somewhere that you dump your kids and go shopping, then pick them up again.
In a way, it is good coz I found the class so interesting and involving both the student and the mother. It gives a strong bonding to us, particularly for Isabel. I think Isabel really enjoyed the class. She was so focused (never before). She answered every questions loudly (and happily), participated in every activities.
On the other hand, probably Ian was too curious about all the equipment, and couldn’t wait to touch the keyboard, he didn’t really pay attention. He is also not obeying to teacher’s instruction. He wanted to do things his ways (like when asked to sit, he lied down on the floor!).
Anyhow, the kids loved the class so well. They all wanted to go back again. I’m so glad to hear that. I don’t want this class to be a burden to them. If they don’t like, I will stop sending them…
But one thing to note too… about Ian.
He said to me, few days later, that… he prefers that I don’t go into the class with him.
Wow, he is only 5 years old, and he already wants to be independent from me. A bit sad for me, this comes so early. But I also know why he said that – I was there, he cannot do as he wish like lying down on the floor. I would discipline him. He doesn’t like to be disciplined. I guess.

It’s good that your children look forward to attending more of the music classes in the future, at least you know you are not paying their music fees in vain.
Alice: Yup, true. I was so worried when I paid. Not cheap!! LOL!
Hi Suzette,
I remember seeing the Yamaha school posters around Bandar Menjalara, can you tell where exactly is the school? thanks.
