New laptop on the way!
Just got a note that my super old laptop will be refreshed in no time! But I am not sure if this is good or bad news.
One one hand, I really would like to replace this old crap, because of the snail speed and various problems it gave me (read here for more). Because of it, I postponed my Jakarta trip. Because of it, I lost 2 weeks precious time and stressed out these few weeks. Because of it, I cannot connect my WiFi…

My old laptop HP Compaq nc4010
After 2 weeks of fixing it, changed its brain, heart, face, bone, etc, (motherboard, harddisk, screen, screw, button board, network card, etc), it finally works though still very slow. I was thinking to stick with it for a little while longer, but now… because of Vista, they will have to change mine because it is just so old that it wouldn’t support Vista! One of the oldest that have to go!

New laptop HP 6910p
Well, getting new laptop, I should be happy right? But then… I heard many users who already got this new model, complaint about getting the horrible blue screen (fatal error, dumping physical memory, etc), or the laptop restarting itself when working half way. I am worried and really wanted to wait till they review this fully.
Apart from these rumours of it not being stable, other concerns I have is the weight.
The new laptop is full functional and weights 2.1kg (4.6lb). My current one is only 1.59kg (3.5lb), and is called the Ultraportable Business Notebook (no wonder). The laptop case will be another 1kg, so I will be carrying 3kg before adding the charger etc. For a small size lady like me, who have to travel frequently, is something very dreadfull.
Seriously, I don’t really need the built in DVD R/W drive. In the past 4 years using this old junk, I hardly use the DVD drive (external). I probably used it 4 times in total. Nowadays, USB flash drive is so commonly used and more convenient. I am also a fan of SD card, and have been surviving solely on it. How good if they can take it out to make it lighter and exchange that to external drive. I won’t carry it when I travel, of course, but would need it if I want to burn data for backup purposes.
Okay, will wait for a week and update again. Whatever said above, I am still anxious to get it, after all the troubles! ![]()

my brand new Dell is frequently giving me the horrible blue screen and restart by itself half way thru all this while.
i also facing the same problem as u mentioned.. (fatal error, dumping physical memory, etc)
i’m not sure is that the Vista problem or the Dell laptop itself is not stable enough.
i even formated 4 times since i bought it in April this year…
i can’t do anything but to accept the fact that i’ve bought a big crap back home. =(
how bout you get MacBook Air… hehe, I know it’s too expensive but less than 0.7kg, you can even put it in an envelope…
anyone wanna exchange link? CekikDarah.com!
My house dell desktop does have this kind of problem, blue page and hang half way while starting up but my HP Compaq laptop is working reli fine. Im using Windows Vista Home Premium running on AMD Dual Core 64x and 4GB of RAM. Everything is working fine on this machine, i never have problem like blue screen or system hang or anything.
I have my Compaq laptop with Solocore for one year liao. Quite consistent
Dot: sorry to hear that! It is very frustrating, I can emphatize with you, coz I have been experiencing that since April too! Seems the same timing with you. But then my laptop is 4 years old, so prob could be caused by compatability issue with new software updates.
Hope when they upgrade the machine it will be fixed.
Cekikdarah: I also love to have Macbook but the company only provides this model.
Justin/Alex: Hmm… Good to hear that you don’t have the problem, but is it the same model exactly shown here? I heard only this model is giving prob not others.
HP has a new light weight model, good for travelers. It has the same configuration as HP 6910p but screen is smaller and a detached DVD RW.
michelle: thanks for the tip, but the company only provides this model ler… That’s why I wanted to wait for just a few more months, when they do their annual review. See, they do this review every once a year, and it happens in Oct. What I will get, is a model that they decided in Oct 2007. So, it is like… 1 year!! No wonder, everytime my laptop is about 3 years old, still under warranty (we have 4 years and our machine’s life is 4 yrs), anothe 1 year to go, and it would be too slow and outdated.
I bet in their review next month, they would include this model you just mentioned!

Ya, laptops, I think generally survives 3-4 years only. That’s why my company’s policy is to change laptops every 4 years.
