Ian’s Best Friend

Published by suzette at 8:53 pm under All,Ian

Ian has gone to the school for over a year now, and have made a few good friends. But no one can beat his BEST friend.

Come meet his best friend here:

smelly bolster

His name is ‘chou-chou bao-zhen’ i.e. Smelly Bolster. The name was given when he was still a baby. He used to kiss the bolster so much that his salivar made it smelly. Of course, after we washed it, it is no longer smelly but the name sticks. :)

He talks to his Smelly Bolster every night and every morning when he wakes up. He used to tug it everywhere he goes, but after I applied the rules of no bolsters outside of the bedroom, he ‘tells’ his ‘best friend’ to stay on bed before he leaves the room. He always bid farewell before he leaves his best friend.

When he was over a year old, Maria suggested it was time for me to upgrade his bolster (or was it Msau?). I agreed and bought a slightly bigger one, given the name of Star-Star Bolster:

star bolster

Ian loved the new Star-Star bolster, but would only put it near him. Nothing can take over his loyalty toward his dear best friend – Smelly Bolster.

Sometimes it is so irritating (to me), that he spends so much time talking to his best friend at night, disturbing both Isabel and me – cannot sleep! His volume is so high, and his best friend’s voice has very high pitch. :D :D

Yes, there ARE CONVERSATIONS between Ian and his Smelly Bolster! Sometimes when I find it too noisy and protest, he would push the blame on his Smell Bolster, “Mama, not me talking. It is my Smelly Bolster…”

I have to sometimes threaten to punish the Smelly Bolster, to make him quiet for a while. He won’t sleep if he keeps talking to his best friend!

There was once, his best friend Smelly Bolster ‘sings’ a Hokkien song. It was so awful, because Smelly Bolster has a very HIGH PITCH. I couldn’t take and and said (without knowing it was the Smelly Bolster who sang), “Ian, why you sing so awfully?”

Guess what? His reaction was, “Bolster! Mama says you sing very awfully, don’t sing any more!”

Hahaha! That IS his imaginative friend. And he actually claims that it is his BEST FRIEND, not us! Isabel is starting to pick this up from him. She starts to talk to her Julia now…, though I cannot understand their conversation. :p

My son’s best friend is a Smelly Doggie. Had it since he was a month old. My sisters bought 5 extra ones just in case it got lost but he never grew attached to them. Recently we had a scare when we couldn’t find it in the house after a hectic morning. I called a hotel and the airport (places he went to for the day), I even dreamt about it at night(didn’t realize that it’s more traumatic for the mum when her child loses his smelly companion ;p). Finally found it the next day hidden in between his rarely used comforter/blanket. Phew!

Hahaha, this is really cute :D I find Ian’s friend having a high pitch voice so humorous! *LOL* Samo can sing Hokkien Song!

My 2 kids don’t really talk on a daily basis to their imaginary friend but I know sometimes they do play pretend.

Zoomed in on a rocket to say hello from the beach in Bay Head, New Jersey. My younger daughter, Maddie, is 6 years old and still loves her “Tonky” — a monkey blanket she’s had since birth.

Haha. My two kids use adult sized bolsters. So its too big to sing Hokkien song or turn into a best friend.

Michael: Hahaha! I haven’t thought of that part. Now come to think of it, if I get to live till his wedding, I might want to embarass him with a speech include this. LOL! :p

EMYYL: Wow! 5 extra? That is a pretty good insurance you’ve bought. :p I read from BabyCenter about buying extra too, but didn’t bother to do that. :)

sue/ aiyu: Hehehe, actually high pitch is to differentiate the 2 characters he plays — normal pitch is Ian himself, and high pitch is his best friend. Quite dramatic, isn’t it? LOL!

Roxy: Don’t worry about 6 years… my cousin, 25 years old, still holding her smelly bolster since birth. LOL! You can imagine how dirty and smelly it is now. The worst thing is, she wouldn’t let people wash it, coz the precious unique smell will be lost. LOL!

MG: I gave my kid adult bolster, he still turns to the one he got from birth. Very loyal…!

Yiwen: Which part are they alike?
