Come, meet your meat

Published by suzette at 8:50 pm under All,Food/ Shopping,Miscellaneous

I stumbled upon this interesting blog with an interesting post on Nissin cup noodle. The blogger’s way of product review is very interesting and attracted me to read on.

But then… what attracted my eyes most, is this meaty picture on his right sidebar, under his blogads. Never a blogad attracted my attention this way.

meat

Under this picture it says:

“See what you’re really eating for dinner. Watch this video that exposes the truth about humanity’s cruelest invention –> the factory farm.”

So, I went in and watched this video, revealing some shocking truth about what we eat every day.

I am too sick after watching this. Immediately I want to stop eating meat, but I know it is almost impossible without involving the whole family. MIL is easy, coz she doesn’t like to eat meat as well. But hard to implement this on children. Also hard to educate my mom as well.

My only question now is, do we need to be vegetarian completely to help? What about seafood? I know they are heavily polluted with heavy metals nowadays, but cut down meat/fish altogether is really hard to start for a meat lover like me! Maybe gradually…

What about you? Are you impacted by this horrible fact?

      Hi Suzette,

The video did show some very disturbing images to say the least. My only concern is that I don’t think it truly represents the norm in these industries.

I’ve seen documentaries on slaughter houses and was actually impressed on how the animals were treated. The animals were brought in one at a time and killed with a blast of water and the back of the neck, killing them instantly.

I’ll agree and hope that everyone in these video was arrested and prosecuted for cruelty to animals. I just don’t think they are the norm. Far from it.

Yes, I am concerned about this kind of animal cruelty, even if it isn’t the norm. We try to buy free-range chicken, etc. for just this reason, you can find a lot about various “organic” companies if you Google them. Some are more humane than others. Also, we’ve switched almost all of our red meat consumption to buffalo meat, which is all free-range and they are killed humanely. It’s also much healthier for you than cow beef, but the taste is VERY similar.

Also, I just voted for you on Battle of the Blogs, good luck!

David: Thanks for visiting my blog and left a comment here. :)
Thanks for the enlightenment. I also wonder if this kind of farms are everywhere in the world, or just in some part. I remember visiting farms in New Zealand and Australia, they don’t look like this, just dunno if they exists (but not open for public)? How about Malaysia, the place I’m living in? A lot to ponder too. But for other reasons (my previous posting on carbon foorprint), perhaps it is a good timing for me to start vegetarian, or just eat seafood? Oh, I missed chicken wings… :p

Cat: Hey! thanks a lot for your vote! Yes, I won in this last battle, thanks to all your support! :) Hope not to lose too many – all my hard earned credits were lost in previous battles. LOL!
Thanks for sharing the fact on buffalo meat. Will give that a considerations – not sure if they are available in this region. :)

Thanks for the post. I mailed it to some friends that need to see it.

If you liked that, you might enjoy, “The Future of Food”. I posted a copy on my blog at the following link:

I like it because it makes no outrageous claims. Everything they speak of can be empirically supported. It’s a great layman’s introduction into genetic engineering and so much more.

I became a vegetarian mainly because I do not want to be involved with these types of activity. I really feel sorry for the poor animals and then have to be answerable when I leave this world (If you believe in this).

I am educating Ryan by saying that animals are our friends and so, we cannot eat them. He understands this (till today) and have been quite easy to deal with when I say that some things he cannot eat.

Becoming vegetarian is not easy, but it is worth a try if these things bother you.

I know some friends who say that no matter how they die, in the end they are meant for consumption!!

This video is terrible. Makes me ask if it´s worth it to live in this world sometimes. When u see that the most dangerous animal in the world is the human being. I don´t eat meat. I never could. I don´t like the taste and also think is not ok to eat someone that was alive just like me, made of the same thing I am (flash and bones). And I have a strong connection with animals since always. They are part of nature and as a pagan nature is my Goddess.
Thank you for sharing this with people. Big kiss!!!

i have seen the chicken on before at facebook . But not the rest. I couldnt stomach the rest of the video, though.

it didnt change my mind about turning into a vegetarian and we try to eat free range chicken instead. Cant do much about pork. But watchng that video makes me want to curb eating pork.

Erik: Thanks for the comment. Looks like this topic is getting more and more interesting… :)

Busy Bee: I didn’t know you are a vegetarian! I can’t remember you were, when we were at CLK wedding dinner… I find it really hard without family’s support in this. My mom keeps cooking meat, though my sister read this post and have the same wave length, still need time to make my mom thinks that way.

Roxy: you are most welcomed, and thanks for your vote! I like your Bay Head Blog, though have not seen it in BOTB yet. :)

Deborah: Oh, you are also a vegetarian? Do you eat fish then? Though I’ve heard of story like this before, this is the first time I am exposed to this reality!

allthingspurple: I haven’t seen even the chicken part before ler… Hmm… free range chicken, do you think they are really free range or could there be chances the seller just claim but not real? Just wonder… :p

Quitting meat ala cold turkey(pardon the pun) is tough(being a ‘meatarian’ myself), perhaps you want to do it in stages?Start from one meal a week and slowly increase. Everything we eat this days has potential to be harmful:beef(Mad Cow), chicken (Bird flu), pork (JE), vege (pesticides) :} One interesting thing though. Was told by a friend(who suffered very bad sinus problem for a long time) that he was advised to stop eating chicken by his doctor. Oddly, his condition improved tremendously. Think it’s got something to do with the antibiotics that they inject into the poultry. This doesn’t mean that they don’t do the same with cows and pigs but given the relative size of the 3 animals, the chicken would probably have a higher concentration of the antibiotics come slaughter time. Food for thought…

EMYYL: That’s true. Also, cancer pantients are not allowed to eat chicken – so can guess what goes into it, right?

I have staged out now – started to cut off meat completely, only eat fish + veggie at this stage. Did this for more than a week already, but then today broke it – followed my colleague for lunch, mana tau they went to chicken rice shop. What else to eat in a chicken rice shop? :p

This is a really tough call. I was a veggie for 7 years. It was tough, but I luckily lived in a veggie friendly city.

Like you said, you would have to probably involve your family. Being a vegetarian means you to be very prepared and eating out is a challenge. Think about when you are on the move, after soccer, on vacation, etc.

For example: Try going to cracker barrel and finding something real to eat that is vegetarian. Good luck, everything is spiked with meat including side vegetables like green beans.

There is a moral vs. reality debate that we all must make and when you are taking care of a family that debate becomes more complicated.

      Good Luck!
