What a scary microgravity environment!

Published by suzette at 11:19 am under All, Book

When I finished reading my last book, I looked at the stack of 50 over ‘new’ books and couldn’t decide which to begin with.

Then I remembered my boss only likes ‘Medical Thrillers’, and I had no clue what is meant by medical thrillers. I sorted the books I have, trying to identify this genre. So, there are 3 Tess Gerritsen’s books, labelled as ‘medical thrillers’. My boss said Tess Gerritsen is VERY GOOD in this genre. She is very critical, so if she says that author is good, there must be a reason.

I checked her reviews in Amazon, surprised to see most of her books are scored around 4 or 5 stars. Very rarely an author gets this. Even though a book can rate 4.5 stars, there are bound to have a substantial number of people rated it 1 or 2 with very good reasons. But not for Tess Gerritsen’s books.

I started with this book: Gravity.

It took quite a while to finish it. I found that that beginning is rather slow, but I think it is necessary to have those background. The beginning part really explains why certain things happened towards the end. Without them, the story would be unbelievable and lots of knots would not be able to be tied properly. She is very good that she has every ends and plots covered. Nothing illogical!

When I was reading it, I had a feeling I was reading something similar to Michael Crichton’s Prey some time ago. The beginning also very slow, but once the story got your attention, it is like watching an adrenaline-laced action-packed science fiction.

Ya, sometimes I am confused with the genre. I thought Prey is a science fiction, but apparently it is also classified as medical thriller!

And this Gravity that I have just read, it also falls in this category – it is a medical thriller, but I thought it is also a science fiction.

In order not to be a spoiler, I’d be vague in the story blurp below, and I suggest that if you are interested in the book – do NOT read the synopsis behind, or you’ll lose the fun of it.

Basically, the story is mostly happening the NASA’s ISS (international space station), and the story is around the astronauts and the ground staff. In the confined space station, in an environment lack of gravity, an experiment went very wrong. A cell culture of something seem to be harmless became infectious and killing the astronauts one by one. The husband of one of them (grounded) fought hard trying to bring them home.

I will reveal as much as this only, or it will spoil the fun of reading. :) Remember, in the beginning it might be slow, but hang on – you will find it worth reading till the end. I couldn’t put down the book, even when I was so sick this week. LOL! Maybe that added on to why it took so long to recover! :p

I’d give this book a score of 5, if the beginning isn’t that slow. So, I’m settling with a score of 4.5. This is definitely better than MHC’s, but they are from different genre…

My rating: ****1/2

3point8: No, I’m not implying Tess Gerritsen is better than M. Crichton, it is MHC (Mary Higgins Clarke) I was comparing, coz I have been reviewing. 4 of her books recently. Sorry for the confusion.

But here I’d think Gerritsen is as good as Crichton. LOL, no one can actually be better than him! :)

Renn: ya, they are so expensive, so I bought a lot from eBay. Used books can be as low as RM 4 or 5, and they are of very good quality. Some that I bought looks like new! But I had the advantage of getting them shipped to mt colleague in US to save shipping. Shipping is the killing part. :(
