Cheaper option of electric breast pump
When I was helping a friend looking for breast pump options, I remembered reading from MMB forum, a member numom mentioned that she purchased Ameda directly from UK, which is a lot cheaper compared to Medela.
I contacted her and on top of that made some further research before sharing with this friend. My friend ended up bought it and used for nearly 3 months now. It seems to be a great option, for mommies looking for an affordable dual pump.

System
Ameda uses the ‘Hygienikit Milk Collection System’, which is FDA certified becoz the milk doesn’t back-flow into the tubes. It is electrical dual-pump, which can save pumping session by half. And most importantly, it is very cheap, compared to Medela.
Where to get?
You can get the Ameda from Robinsons (Spore) which is selling at SGD350 or Momsinmind.com. Including shipping costs, it would easily come to RM850 (depending on the exchange rates at the time of order).
Numom and my friend both got theirs from a UK online store, Richard Cassidy. You can email Richard directly at info@richardcassidy.co.uk also. I was told he has been very helpful and quick response too.
The cost of the pump (Ameda Personal dual electric breast pump) is GBP72.34 + Shipping GBP24,
total GBP96.34 (about RM700 depends on exchage rates).
Richard threw in quite a few of freebies for the two moms. Numom received a pair of Flexishields and 10 x 100ml storage bottles. My friend received 6 breast pads and 4 Storage bottles. If you get the pump from Singapore, it might not come with the Flexishields and other freebies - you’ll have to ask and confirm.
Alternatively, you can also get from a local online store at blessedmums.com, at RM788 (excluding shipping). I’m not sure about the warranty offered, and you are advised to check this out with the store, though the website said ‘Guaranteed for 2 years‘. [Thanks reader cllau for sharing this info in comments]
Users Reviews
Numom feels that the motor is quite compact and light weight. The diaphragm and the valve are however, quite fragile and would require care when washing. The manuals to control cycle speed and suction intensity are easy to use and quite effective. It can be operated on battery, so no worries if you have to pump in the toilet or anywhere with no power supply.
My friend felt that the motor is quite noisy, other than that she has no complaints at all! Saving a thousand Ringgit (compared to Medela, around RM1800 now, or more!) is a LOT worth, compared to the trivial noise.
Warranty
One important point to note though: since it is purchased from outside of Malaysia, any repair or replacement of parts & services would be a problem. So, it is a risk that you’ll have to take.

I just bought a Medela PISA last week. If not I would have seriously consider Ameda since the reviews for this product (from Amazon.com and Bizrate) is quite favorable. I went to ask Robinson in Mid Valley but they don’t carry the brand.
I am using it now.Is a good option for working mum to be consider. Save money & time. Just remember to buy
extra spare parts especially the valve & diaphragm since paying so much for the freight already.
Renn: Ya, it is sometimes quite frustrating that, a lot of the good stuffs are not available in Malaysia, but sold in our neighboring countries! They are also generally cheaper if bought from Singapore. What’s wrong with our government’s taxes ya? Even with higher exchange rate with SG$, it is still cheaper buying things there…
Piggy: Thanks for visiting! I was actually quoting you in my story above! LOL!
Good advice on buying extra spare parts. Moms to take note!
actually there is a local online shop selling it. its blessedmums.com, selling at rm788
If only I knew this online shop earlier, it would have save me $$$!
cllau: Thanks for the lead. I edited this post to include this online shop, for the benefit of people who don’t read comments.
Renn: well, to think of it, you are paying for the distributors/manufacturer’s warranty support from Medela mah!
I saw the Ameda available in Malaysia. namely in Babyland SS2. Price is RM 788 . This pump is very good.
Trexxd: Thanks for sharing. It is good that mothers have a choice now, and a cheaper one!
I bought from blessedmom and have been using it extensively for 1.5 months since 5th day after birth (pump 5/6 times a day) as my BB doesn’t want to suck, and glad that the pump output is able to give full BM for my BB. Peak performance is 7oz
but currently dropped to 2oz again after I got food poisoning on sunday and din pump for more than 5 hours:(
Very happy with Ameda except the availability of spare parts in Malaysia, as I tried to get the larger flange but they dun hv it. so I’ve to buy from ebay.com (still waiting). Be careful while washing the valves, it spoil easily. I got mine replaced by ordering thru the local supplier. It costs RM19 for that little tiny valve! Now just wondering whether I should buy the diaphragm…
Alice: Congratulations for successfully breastfeeding your baby! Valves are always the most fragile parts in all brands’ of pumps. My Avent Isis was okay for the first 2 years, then when I tried to use it for my second child, it tore every 2 months. The new valves are very expensive, around RM10 or RM20 per piece (can’t remember already). Bet you, this is s plot, for them to earn our after sales market. LOL!
Any idea if the Ameda pump has the 2-phase technology as Medela PISA? Otherwise the Medela Mini Electric Plus (double pump) selling only at RM 629 would be more value for money you think? I’m still toying with the idea of getting a double pump cos my MPI is really really low now (only 20 - 40 ml per pump session) and my dh is 15 months now; don’t know how long more I will breastfeed
pumpkin: your baby is already 15 months old? Do you intend to get pregnant again? If so then worth investing, otherwise might not be that economical. Maybe can consider renting from Medela? I know they provide renting service. Contact below:

I haven’t used Ameda before, so can’t tell whether they have 2-phase or not. So far, what I’ve heard from users are generally good.
thanks for your suggestion suzette. i’ve checked with Lactaequip before, but they only rent the Lactina. its too heavy and bulky for office and travelling use…
i do plan to have at least another kid; keeping my fingers crossed !!
hai suzette,
i’m just looking for avent sparepart, i want to buy diaphragm..do u know where can i get it?
hi suzzette and everyone,
im a mother to be n expected to have my baby gal in early nov this year. Im looking for an electric breast pump and im not sure which one is the best. Some says medela but it does make some noisy sound. Some says avent is good. I’ve never seen ameda brand here in malaysia eventhough i’ve heard bout the brand. can anybody assist me and pour me some infos via email - buttermilx@yahoo.com.
Thanx a lot!
siti: the contact for the avent spareparts is in the comments above. :
iza: I’m sorry I have not used ameda before. I’ve used both avent and medela, they are equally good, but they are not the same type so cannot compare directly. Avent that I used is a manual pump - superb performance once you master it, but its new valve is a bit weak. Medela if you use double pump, it can save you a lot of money, which I think will be applicabl to Ameda.
