Bite my teeth on sore nipples
With Isabel, my breastfeeding journey was a lot easier as I have the experience from breastfeeding Ian (my first born). I didn’t experience any sore nipples, mastitis, nor serious blocked ducks.
When I was breastfeeding Ian, due to lack of experience and perhaps incorrect handling of breast pump, I had very bad sore nipples. I think I actually tore it with too strong suction of the pump, plus Ian was a strong boy with high demand and strong suction.
At one point, I really imagined that my nipple could be torn off from my breast! LOL!
The worst situation I have ever encountered with this sore nipples was when I pumped out light pink colour milk – that is blood mixed with it. During expression, I could still adjust the pressure to reduce pain, but during direct breastfeeding, the pain can be so unbearable that tears dropped unvoluntarily, and I had to bite my teeth to stop myself from yelling!
What did I do with that? Nothing. I just tried to air dry them as and when possible, and they healed by themselves. Now that I have mastered hand express, I believe it could help too, as hand express doesn’t use any force on the nipples – no suction, no pulling, etc.
BTW, the bloody milk – after frozen and thawed later, had blood ‘powder’ at the bottom. Since I had exessive supply at that time, we threw them away. Not very comfortable with that. LOL!

It really hurt, I still remember. Luckily you throw the milk.
Mine…. I thought my baby vomit blood when she throw
out milk , think think , oh, is actually from my sore nipple .
salute you on your determination to continue breastfeeding. i remember the pain quite well too. but i still think it is worth the pain.
kudos to all the b/f mummies out there!!!
I have not experience those blood part yet and hope i dont have to…maybe i am still new in breastfeeding. My son only coming to 4 month…
piggy: Wow, your baby threw out milk and you discovered blood inside? Wow… Maybe your baby tasted blood, didn’t like the taste and threw them out? Smart baby. LOL!
Busy Bee: Luckily the pain was only for the first baby, and was for a short while only.
Renn: Not all mothers would experience that. You are lucky. If you didn’t get it first 4 months, you are unlikely to get it. I didn’t get that when I breastfed my second child, Isabel.
I think you had the right positioning…
