Is it true the breasts will sag with breastfeeding?

Published by suzette at 9:02 pm under All,Breastfeeding,Brfg: Others

Many people, including moms and moms to be, believe that breastfeeding can make the breasts sag. This is also one of the key factor that hinders moms from breastfeeding.

Is it true?

I asked my gynae about this.

His answer is: As long as during pregnancy and soon after delivery of baby, once the breasts enlarged (due to hormone changes), with or without breastfeeding the breasts will most likely to sag.

His explaination is that, the breasts are like elastic rubber bands or balloons — once enlarged/expanded, it is hard to return to the previous size/firmness. Unless the mother is very young (full of collagen??), it is generally common to be sagged.

[Added: Conclusion - Sagging breasts are NOT caused by breastfeeding, but probably caused by pregnancy and age!]

I think this is a sacrifice a mom would have to accept, especially if we are not young when giving birth (like early 20??). Sigh!

So, no excuse not to breastfeed. That’s my point. ;)
(Or to give birth early? LOL!)

With the hike in milk powder prices, I think saggy breasts are small sacrifices to make! Apparently will increase next month again!!!

I’ve recently stumbled upon a study saying that breastfeeding doesn’t make breasts sag. Check out here : http://www.plasticsurgery.org/media/press_releases/Breastfeeding-Does-Not-Create-Sagging-Breasts.cfm

montessorimum: That confirms what my gynae says! He said sagging breasts actually caused by pregnancy, NOT breastfeeding.

Auddra/busy bee: Great, for the benefit of our kids and our pockets, sagging breasts are nothing! ;) [hope our husbands think the same! LOL!]

The main purpose of breasts is to provide milk, so sagging breasts should not be an excuse not to breastfeed…

giddy tiger: unfortunately it is one of the stumbling block. You know, some insensitive moms pointed to me and said – is that the reason for my sagging breasts? With people like that, I’m sure they will discourage their friends to breastfeed, not to mention themselves not feeding too!

There are just too many excuses that people take, when they don’t want to commit to something. You’ll be amaze with some of the excuses made. For instance – doesn’t want to have enlarged breast coz cannot wear nice shirts! * eyes rolling *

true, true, most people are just giving one reason after another not to breastfeed. I have heard those excuses once too many times. But okay, so long as they dont step on my tails and condemn ME breastfeeding.

on that note, havent you girls heard once too many excuses about ceasarian as well? some want to have natural birthing but couldnt and those who could find excuses to have ceasarian. sorry to digress , Suzzette

allthingspurple: no problem, similar topic anyway. Actually to your point, some uses c-sec as excuse not to breastfeed also. ;)

haiyoh…. c-sec also can be used as an excuse, ar? I wanted natural birth but gynae says after on drip for 12 hours and not open more than 2 cm, not likely will open up to 10 cm till cow come home, anyhow baby in distress by 12 hours so got no choice, but I bf also leh… big clap for myself…. tak malu.. but honestly, c-sect should be the least of excuses, dont you think?

allthingspurple: Yes, you deserve a big clap! :) I wasn’t on c-sec, so cannot tell the problem. But I was told the wound is very painful, hard to move around, and hard to get a good position for breastfeeding. Maybe that’s the reason why they can’t continue. Also, not many people comfortable with lying down position, which is the best for c-sec mothers.
