Files Backup

I have been getting warnings that my space usage is over the allocated quota. I have been asked to archive my files so many times by the admin.

Well, not that I don’t want to archive them. I actually need the files as my daily reference. I always need to write reports that look at trends, and that has to be backdated to 3 to 5 years ago. That’s why, I have to keep all the project reports from day-1.

In the past, I’ve tried to archive them in CDs. That resulted fourty over CDs on the rack. When I want to do a report, I often have to open up to 10 archived reports from 10 CDs, and that is such a pain. If I am traveling, that’s even worse, as I can’t be carrying all my CDs wherever I go!

There are some solutions actually. One of them is online backup solution provided by IDrive-E. It is free up to 2GB (guess it is sufficient for me), secure and fast. It is always mapped on our PC for easy reference and retrieval of files. Very easy to signup and start using.

The only problem for me with this solution is, I travel a lot, and most of the time I don’t get internet access. Guess it is more suitable for those who are grounded.

Of course, other option would be to buy an external harddisk, which I what I’ve just done. :) It is of course more costly compared to the online backup. Though the external HD is quite small, it still adds on to the total weight that I have to carry when I’m on the move. Has its pros and cons.
