No Seat Belt
Having read a lot about the importance of seat belt, and being trained of safety by the company, I always insist that all my children are buckled in whenever the car moves.
Both my children were trained to use car seat since birth. When Ian approached 3 years old, I have to ‘upgrade’ him to booster seat as he is too tall for the 5 point harnest car seat.
Recently, he starts to challenge me by moving his shoulders out, which makes the seat belt unable to function fully in case of any accidents.
I’ve been threatening him to stop the car, or asked him to leave the car if he doesn’t put his shoulder inside. I found this tiring, threatening is not the right way of disciplining kids, which I know.
So, I showed him a video I downloaded from AhBoon (far below). And I told him, if he doesn’t put his shoulder in, in case of any accident (i.e. if Mama hit into someone’s car), he will ‘fly out’ like the uncle in the video.
He was scared after watching the video.
Now, everytime when I apply brakes, he’d tell me that his shoulder is inside the seat belt. Well, sometimes he forgets, but with little reminder, he quickly corrects it. Thanks to those video, I can educate/ discipline my children easier and more efficient! Also, instead of doing that for mama, he is now doing that for himself, for his own safety. He can understand this wearing seat belt thingy fully.

wow never thought that will Educate a 3yrs old child… I oso need to show my girl liao :p
Suzette, I got goosebump seeing that clip.
But I will show it to my boy. But don’t know if it’s too scary for him.
AhBoon:
I remembered you (or one of your readers) mentioned that this clip was made by some government to educate their citizens, right? So I thought it might work on my kids.
Shoppingmum: Well, if Justin listens to you, then perhaps you can wait till later. I showed Ian because he keeps moving his shoulders out, dangerous mah!
This really work on Ian?? I gotta show SQ too..I changed her to bosster seat 2 months ago too..she keep moving her shoulders out like Ian done before..I have told her many times not to do so..But she think this is fun wat..kek si…I’m going to show her tonight..let see what she say..:P
msau: Yes, I can testify it! Last night, he did that again, and I asked him whether he wants to fly out like the uncle in the video? He immediately tucked it back, but he demanded to see the video again.
Also, everytime when I apply brake (at bump or traffic light or avoided some idiots), he’d tell me in relieved tone: “Mama! I put my shoulder in, so I no fly out just not when you “hit other people’s car”. Ya, he keeps saying I ‘hit into other people’s car’, whenever I apply brakes. He still doesn’t know the difference yet. Really choi-tai-kat-laisi!
Dmitry did that too. We are tiring (especially LA) of telling him to buckle up. I just showed him the video. Let’s see the next time if he buckles up or not. It takes a lot of efforts to educate a child and patience is needed the most.
Adrian, do update us whether it works for Dmitry or not ya?
Msau/Shoppingmum: you too, can update us whether it works on your children?
It works on Dmitry last night when we went out for dinner. I reminded him about the video and he quickly buckle up. Today, he forgot (forgot?) to buckle when I picked him from school. Perhaps he has really forgotten.
Let’s see how he will do in the next few days.
Adrian: He forgot, but when you reminded him, does he listen to you then? My previous problem was Ian refused to listen, but after seeing the video, he listens to me now.
I donch know if i would show chloe the clip.. because i myself.. hesitate in watching it. But like you .. we’ve always insisted that she is buckle up.. since young. But like your Ian.. she likes to let slip .. the shoulder strap. I have to remember to ask PB to tighten it since she no longer wears winter clothings anymore.
Mamabok: Hmm… got to be careful then, not to let it slip.
