Breastfeeding Journey

Before I was pregnant, I’ve heard from a friend about breastfeeding’s benefit.  She is the first person who exposed me to the world of breastfeeding.  My then only source of breastfeeding knowledge.

To ‘hook’ me in, she ’sold’ me the idea of losing weight naturally and easily through breastfeeding.  She was a walking example/proof of it.

When I got pregnant, I remembered what she said.  I was so determined to lose my postnatal weight , so I researched carefully and wanted to buy the ‘most expensive’ breastpump to keep me committed.  At that time, my knowledge was so limited and I thought the Avent Isis I got was already the ‘most expensive’!  So naive.  :P

I refused to stock any formula milk, not even any small amount for whatever they called ‘emergency cases’.  To me, if there is formula milk, it will be likely used.  No formula milk, by hook or crook, I will have to breastfeed.

This tactic actually worked!  After delivered Ian, as expected the confinement lady and the mothers (MIL and my own) asked to supplement.  The confinement lady kept pushing me to let her take care of Ian at night.

Their intention was good, wanted me to have enough rest.  They are doing the best for me, as they are my mothers who care for me.  But I am also a mother and I care of Ian’s well being too.  So, I insisted no formula, no substitude, and Ian stays with me even at night (note: always room-in with your child if you want bfg successfully).

I was lucky that Ian (and Isabel) had no problem with latch on, and I was lucky I didn’t have any problem with positioning.  I know there are a lot of breastfeeding failure due to wrong position (the way they hold the baby when feeding).

Also thanks to the support from the members in a Malaysian breastfeeding forum, MMB, I managed to continue breastfeeding till Ian was 16 months old, even with heavy travels!

Breastfeeding was actually quite easy for me.  I am really blessed on this.  Thanks God!
