Ian Fever Again

Published by suzette at 5:31 pm under All,Ian

After the past experience with Ian’s high fever, this time we are less panic.

Well, Ian’s fever started on Tuesday evening. We only sponged him and gave him Paracetamol. Similar to last time, it didn’t help to bring down his fever.

Egghead’s LLS also had the same problem last week. Poor LLS had to go for blood test, and that experience sounds so scary that I really hope Ian doesn’t have to go through that.

I checked that Ian doesn’t have any flu, cough, rashes or red spots. He seems happy and active. I will wait till tomorrow, if his fever doesn’t subside, then I will bring him to see a doctor. Too many times bringing him to see a doctor, ended up just SEE doctor. :D

What I learnt from the past experience is, if babies get high fever, just follow this:
1. Check for running nose/cough
2. Check for rashes or red spots
3. Check for sore throat
4. If none from 1-3, give him Panadol and sponge him to help reducing the temperature
5. If this doesn’t help, by day 3 should bring to see doc, and probably doc will prescribe antibiotic or advise other tests (hopefully not dengue or other serious stuff)
6. If you bring babies to see doc earlier, they will give Panadol, only.

Disclaimer: This is only writing from my own experience. I am not a qualified medical practitioner, so what I do may not be correct. If your child is sick, you should bring him to see a qualified doctor.

well… I am not a qualified MD as well… but my mum’s a nurse, I work in general hospital with a lot of MDs and nurses… so I can guide you on some of your points:
      - dengue can be detected accurately through blood test (platlet count) from day 3-5 normally
      - rashes can be result of viral or bacteria attack, which results in high fever
      - PCM (or panadol) should be given at correct dosage, and only under advise from doctor
      - day 3 is correct day to bring child to see doctor
      - anti-biotics are given only to counter viral or bacteria attack, not every kind of fever
      - to confirm viral or bacteria presence in body, do urine test (FEME, C&S test to be specific), results should be known within 2 days
      - continuous sponging are necessary for high fever (38 degrees and above)

Hope that helps now and in future…

TM: ya, read quite a few news in the blogsphere that babies fall sick. First, belacan, then egghead, then… can’t remember liao, then my Ian. :(

J: thanks for dropping by. His fever is different from last time. Last time fever didn’t come down at all, not even for 1 minute, which appear to be the ‘fake meassle’ (Chinese said). But this time, should be okay because it is up and down. Less worrying.

egghead: Thanks for sharing the tips. That’s why I kept telling DH no need to see doc immediately, because I can be quite sure what doc will do. He will check Ian’s toungue, ask whether got flu and cough, then listen to his lung see clear or not. Then, he will say nothin wrong with Ian, and he will give PCM only. And most often, my doc will not give PCM also, he will ask me to use the old stock I have. He is very nice one doesn’t want me to spend extra. So, most of the time I only pay RM5 and chat with the doc for a while.

I remember the last time, after rushing Ian to hospital at night (fever 40 degree didn’t subside for even a minute, for 2 days), the doc just sponged him and prescribed antibiotic. But she told me not to give antibiotic until 3 days later if fever don’t go off. Hehe, that’s how I judged ’3-days’ is a good number. :p
