Ian High Fever (40 degree)!

Well, I was supposed to be in Manila on Wed-Fri, but have to ask my boss to go on behalf of me (I’m sure she is not very happy, but very understanding lah). Why? I just can’t leave behind Ian with high fever and work so remotely from him!

Sunday afternoon, he started to have fever. Last Thursday we gave him MMR vaccination, so we expected him to have mild fever anyway. We just gave him Paracetamol as instructed by the pediatrician. But this time it didn’t work. His temperature consistently high, above 38 degree.

Monday morning, we brought him to see doc, worried of other causes (apart from MMR jab). Doc said nothing wrong with him, and added Brufen to Ian’s medicine, to be alternated with Paracetamol, every 6 hours. But then it didn’t improve, temperature still above 38.

At around 6pm, his temperature went up to 39.5 degree. I remembered the doc said, “It is only considered HIGH if it is above 39.” So, we were very worried. At 7pm, it went up to 39.7 degree.

We didn’t know what to do. We have been sponging him as taught by one paed earlier, but it had no effect to bring down his temperature this time. With our hands, we felt the body cooled down, but when measured with thermometer, it was still high at 39+.

So, we brought him to hospital emergency. At that point his temperature reached 40 degree. The nurses there also sponged him like what we did, but they also inserted another fever medicine to Ian’s butt. Not sure which worked, Ian’s temperature dropped to 39. So, we were asked to go home and continue sponging him every 20 minutes.

At home, probably due to the strong medicine inserted, the temperature dropped to 36. But after 3-4 hours, it went up to 39+ again!

Tuesday morning, I had to ask my boss to go to Manila on behalf of me (sorry boss). How to work with a sick child back at home?

I brought Ian to see his regular paed on Tuesday, and he suspected it is the MMR jab – the measles vaccine may cause this. So, we waited until yesterday (Thu) – red spots came out, and it really marked the end of Ian’s fever. Whew!

Strange that Ian didn’t show any discomfort. He was as active as usual.

Well, doc said only 10% get fever after MMR, so unlucky Ian is amongst the 10%. Ya, previously when he had fever, it was up and down, so not so worried, but this time it was consistently high at 39.7 degree. It lasted 2 days, so made me scared. :p

That must have been worrying, but sometimes children do get high fever without any other signs.

      Hope he’s okay by now.
