1st Birthday
Ian’s first birthday is coming soon. Well, it is another 1.5 months away, but to me is ‘soon’.
Since 2 months ago, I have already applied leave to celebrate his birthday. Actually his birthday falls on a public holiday (21 April), but I still took 20 and 22 April off. Since I will have to travel again on business from 23 Apr till 1 May, I thought of spending some good time with Ian.
On his birthday, I intend to do the ‘select-it’ game with Ian. It is a traditional thing that old folks do to predict what would the child do in future. Actually, I don’t believe this at all, but for the fun of it, I still want to ‘play’ this game with Ian.
What we will do is to place a few items indicating different types of jobs in front of the child, and jot down what the child takes first, second, third etc. The items will comprise of: a book, a drumstick, an abacus (now replaced with calculator), a scale, money, etc (can’t remember what else). It is believed that if a child picks up drumstick first, he loves to eat. Abacus represents businessman, scale represent… err can’t remember. I don’t really know what money and book represent, but I guess like the drumstick – if child picks them mean he likes to read or he likes money?
Anyway, we are all looking forward to celebrate his first birthday.

My MIL was beating herself up over forgetting this ritual on my son’s 1st birthday.
